The Little Gem - Southchurch Park Café

We’ve been lucky enough to live by Southchurch Park for the last 22 years, which coincides with the time that Mel and her partner, followed by her daughter Nat, have been running the café there.

In those early days at Southchurch Park, our children used to have the ‘kid’s meal’ for a pound, that included either sausage, burger, or nuggets, chips and beans or peas, a soft drink followed by ice cream. Nowadays their palettes are a little more sophisticated, yet they are still there regularly, to see what’s on offer.

The reason for this is the good ‘old fashioned’ cooking. At the café they roast their beef, the Shepherd’s Pie is homemade, as are the scones and cake. There is a very filling all day brunch in case you miss breakfast and if you just fancy a cuppa, well that’s not a problem either. Everything is very reasonably priced and when you consider the café is open from 10am daily most days of the year, then you can surmise that the staff are more than just a little bit dedicated.

What is most surprising is the feeling of community that the Southchurch Park Café is at the centre of. Every day, people pop in for a chat and any of the latest ‘developments’. OAP’s drop by for their daily lunch and the dog walkers all sit outside for a natter. In ‘cricket’ season, sandwiches are deftly made and whisked off to the cricket pavilion and at Christmas, there are turkey dinners to be sampled.

When the occasional ‘lost’ dog turns up, or a kid falls off their bike, then it’s off to the café to arrange a search or, for a plaster!

In the summer months, there is musical entertainment at the weekends to go with a salad or Sunday lunch and whilst it can get busy, everybody gets served in the end! Whether it’s hot and sunny, or cold and windy, there is always a welcome at Southchurch Park Café!
