Rochford in Essex a Historical Town

Rochford in Essex is a historical town whose early houses have featured in the Domesday Book 1086. All photos in this blog post are taken by Bear Estate Agents Rochford

In the days before Southend existed and Prittlewell was the principle town and even before Rayleigh became established, Rochford was an influential town. Surrounded by rich, fertile agricultural land and rivers for milling flour, it had its own corn exchange and livestock market. Rochford was central to this, with its own Court Sessions held in the ‘Old Ship Inn’ and the Petty Sessions held at the Kings Head which are both still in existence as Public Houses. Rochford gave name to ‘The Hundred and Union of Rochford’, which was a sub-division of Essex.

Only 43 miles from London, with direct road and train links to the City, it would be easy to believe that Rochford has turned into just another dormitory town for commuting to London, but this is not the case. With so many of Rochford’s houses existing from earlier centuries and many of them being listed buildings, and before our Rochford house agent’s time, it has not yet been ‘discovered’ as the little historic gem that it is.

Rochford Council is working hard to keep what is best about Rochford and improve what is not. A ‘Town Action Plan’ was approved last year which should make access from the town’s station to the market square simpler as well as improve the traffic flow around Rochford town centre.

Our Rochford house agent has marketed several properties around the town centre and along its historic streets. Rochford Council recognise the many rows of one-and-a-half storey cottages which were so typical of this part of Essex but there are many other types of houses in Rochford too, and our house agent can give some examples here.

This property is a grade II listed cottage in East Street, very close to the town centre, with two double bedrooms to the ground floor and kitchen, lounge and dining, above.

Here is another grade II listed cottage in East street, Just next door, but with only 1 bedroom:-

Rochford also had a General Hospital but originally it was the maternity hospital for the area. In 1956. A sister from this hospital, Sister J Ward realised that sunshine had a positive effect on babies born jaundiced. It was her findings that led to phototherapy treatment for new-born babies. Both the Maternity Hospital and General Hospital are now gone and housing built in its place. The Hospital Boiler House, however, remains and has been converted into apartments, one of which our Rochford house agent shows here:-

Within 10 minutes’ walk from the town centre but close to the countryside is this 5 bed property, taken by one of our Rochford estate agents:
