Westcliff-on-sea was once the hub of an independent shopping area that was Hamlet Court Road. Its architecture reflected the times when it was known as the ‘Bond Street of the East Coast’. One of the shops from those days is Havens, a department store built in 1901. It still stands as ‘Havens’ today but is part of a thriving ecommerce business, too.
Thanks to regeneration in this century, Bear has seen an economic upturn in the area. Hamlet Court Road is home to many restaurants and small shops.
It takes 50 minutes to reach London by train from Westcliff Station, a fact that has made Westcliff a favourite haunt of day trippers from London. A short walk south from the station brings people onto Western Esplanade, with its beaches, and cafes ‘under the arches’, as well as its famous ice cream parlour, Rossi’s.
