If you are a lover of outdoor sports, Thorpe Bay is the place to live. Within its boundaries there is a golf course, a yacht club, lawn tennis and a bowls club.
The challenging Thorpe Bay Golf Club course has been in situ since 1907 and is popular with golfers of all abilities. It is set within the grounds of Thorpe Hall and has a very active social club.
Dinghies and all types of sailing craft have been sailing the waters adjacent to Thorpe Bay Yacht Club since 1948. There is storage available for your boats here, as well as a clubhouse bar and restaurant that overlooks the sea.
Not far from the Thorpe Bay Yacht Club is Thorpe Bay Bowling Club. Set within the grassy area to the front of Thorpe Bay Gardens, this also has a clubhouse and bar with views over the estuary.
Further along the prom, within the green space opposite the sea, is Thorpe Bay Lawn Tennis Club. It has 16 courts, 4 of which are floodlit and is considered to be one of the most well equipped tennis clubs in the UK.
In a walk around Thorpe Bay, you will discover wide leafy roads with a mix of large detached Edwardian properties as well as those built between the 1930’s-1970’s. Thorpe Hall Avenue runs along the side of the golf club and there is a grassy walk down the middle of the carriageway which covers the track on which the trams used to run along, and on to the seafront. If you turn easterly towards Shoeburyness and walk along Thorpe Bay Gardens you will find some of the more prestigious properties of the area. Alternatively, go west and on to the seafront, where you will also find fine examples of ‘executive’ Thorpe Bay homes. The Roslin Beach Hotel is in this area and has been lovingly renovated. This hotel and restaurant is home to a spa and many weddings and other celebratory events.
This area, as well as that which runs between Thorpe Hall Avenue, Maplin Way and the southerly part of Shoeburyness, is known as the Burges Estate. This is important to note as it was developed from the 1900s, was expanded over the next 60 years and was named after John Burges, who came from Ireland. His ‘seat’ was believed to be at Thorpe Hall, now the golf club and a number of Thorpe Bay’s roads are names taken from his Irish roots such as Tyrone, Parkanaur and Dungannon.
There are certain covenants that exist for the Burges Estate. One of these restrict the development to and of, properties here. Of note is the covenant that does not allow ‘alehouses’ or ‘hostelries’ to be erected and may go some way to explaining why the sports clubs all have bars, Here! From Thorpe Esplanade you can choose The Broadway or St. Augustine’s Avenue to take you to Thorpe Bay Station. If you choose St Augustine’s, you will traverse a road lined with beautifully maintained properties until you come to an island in the middle of the road. On this island, St Augustine’s Church stands proudly with a quiet road forming a ‘moat’ around it. Built in the 1930’s it is the parish church for Thorpe Bay and has a neo-gothic interior.
Choosing The Broadway to go towards the station, will take you down a wide road with properties with their own unique architecture. You will also walk past a barely noticeable chapel that was built in the 1920s. This used to be part of St Audrey’s Convent, which was originally opened as a holiday retreat for some of East London’s children, but then became a holiday and rest home for nuns, before its closure. Towards the end of the road is The Broadway shopping centre. Here you will find an eclectic mix of individual shops and boutiques, as well as chain stores. There are Bakers, Grocers, Florists, gift shops and chemists, as well as cafes and restaurants.
Thorpe Bay Station was opened in 1910 and is on the c2c to Fenchurch Street line which takes just under an hour to get into London. Commuting every day from this station will guarantee you a seat for the journey. Where Station Road joins the Maplin Way boundary, stands a row of properties that were built specifically for those working on and at, the railway station.
On the north side of the railway there is an area of Thorpe Bay in which many detached bungalows can be found. Some are known as ‘Goldsworthy properties’ named after the builders. The use of wood in the façade and interiors of the properties, have made them very desirable.
In this area, Bournes Green Schools can be found. The junior school has an excellent 11+ pass rate record for entry to the local grammar schools and properties are sought after in its catchment area. Thorpe Bay’s beaches are a world away from the day tripper’s paradise of Southend’s Golden Mile. They are a peaceful retreat and wooden beach huts, much like those in Southwold, can be found situated right on the beach, on wooden ramps to keep them above the incoming tides.
The area known as Thorpe Bay has so much to offer. You really do not have to travel out of it, to find everything you need for a happy and healthy lifestyle.
