Historically, Shoebury was a rural area with a scattered community of about 350 people. In 1797 a single station was built on Shoebury’s coastline for the purpose of guarding the area during the Napoleonic War. Three years later it housed Royal Artillery and Gunnery schools, and by 1851, because of the Crimean War, it had developed into a Garrison town. More information can be found here
Development took place around the High Street at the East Gate and included Rampart Terrace and Hinguar Street but it was not until the railway arrived in 1884 that further development took place. On the other hand, development that took place at the West Gate at ‘Cambridge Town’, created slum conditions which Shoebury Urban District Council was formed to resolve.
Nowadays, the town’s variety of housing stock and amenities can be found in different areas that reflect its history. As your local estate agent in Shoebury, Bear has dealt with many of these properties. Besides The Garrison, Shoeburyness offers large detached houses next to Shoebury’s southernmost beach at Shoebury Common and many character and new build properties.
Shoebury Common beach with its promenade and beach huts and café make it ideal for families. Around the coast a public path takes you past the marsh and Gunners Park, the Garrison with its cricket ground and preserved houses, to East Beach. Here there are grassy areas for parking and picnics, beaches and natural wildlife areas.
To the northeast of Shoebury lays Friars Park where fishing can be enjoyed and to the west of the town, Shoebury Park and tennis courts.
