Considering Leigh-on-sea has its roots in the cockle industry and a small fishing village, it has expanded into a large, diverse town, which has kept its unique charm.
This diversity can be seen in ‘Old Leigh’ with its 19th century pubs and cobbled street. Cockles and mussels and other seafood delights can be feasted on here. A walk up steep Church Hill is St. Clements Church with its 15th century tower. This parish church, where smugglers used to sharpen their swords on concrete encased graves, is the epicentre of boutiques, eateries to suit every taste, and essential stores. The Broadway running west towards the 'Marine Estate' and its spacious houses, and east, to more shops in Leigh Road, which is bordered by Chalkwell Park.
This busy and vibrant area is surrounded by sought after housing and excellent schools, which makes Leigh-on-Sea a highly desirable area to live in.
Leigh has several state primary schools and private schools. Schools such as West Leigh and 'North Street' Leigh Primary, are performing well according to Ofsted reports, as is 'Fairways' to the north of the town. Chalkwell schools and Darlinghurst are also doing well at present. Belfairs Academy is the secondary school for the area and there are also Westcliff and Southend Grammar Schools close by
North of the A13 ‘London Rd.’ offers a mix of houses from Victorian to modern which reach down to Belfairs Park. This borders the north Leigh area and has a huge woodland, which provides a haven for wildlife and golfers alike. North of Blenheim Crescent is an area that is becoming increasingly popular and to the west of the park, the ‘Highland Estate’, whose road names reflect the times when part of the area was owned by Mr. Walker, in the 1920’s. This is a favourite area being close to the woods.
