The name ‘Benfleet’ comes from the Saxon term ‘Beamflote’ meaning ‘treestream’ as it was in the area where creeks from the River Thames joined wooded areas. The area finally became Benfleet when the railway and its station were built in 1855.

Both South and North Benfleet ‘grew’ in similar ways. Historically, Sth. Benfleet was a village by the sea which rose up hills where ‘plots’ of land were sold off. North Benfleet, in contrast, was a rural community in the early 20th century. Housing in those early days reflected the economic depression with people moving from areas of London to be in the country with its various farmsteads. The land around which was also, eventually marked out into ‘plots’ on to which dwellings began to appear. Once the ‘Arterial Road’ was completed in the 1930’s, the demand for these ‘plots’ grew into the varied housing estates that make up North Benfleet today.
